  • Shijing Sun

    Shijing Sun

I am an assistant professor in Mechanical Engineering, interested in energy, materials, and collaborative intelligence that brings together robots, AI and scientists to tackle some of the greatest challenges of our times. Before moving to Seattle, I worked with Prof. Tony Cheetham in Cambridge, UK, Prof. Tonio Buonassisi in Cambridge, MA, and Dr. (and Professor) Brian Storey in the Bay Area.

PhD Students

  • Clara Tamura

My name is Clara Tamura and I am a graduate student in Mechanical Engineering. My research interests are in machine learning for autonomous systems and soft materials. I grew up in Yokohama Japan before coming to Seattle to do my undergraduate studies at Seattle University. I will be working on developing an automation system for clean energy materials at the Sun lab.

MS Students

  • Souryadeep Mondal

I am Souryadeep Mondal, a second-year Mechanical Engineering Grad student. I'm passionate about sustainable energy systems, with a background of four years as a Mechanical Engineer. I was born and raised in India, where I completed my undergraduate studies as well. I will be working on battery performance design with Professor Dr. Shijing Sun. In my free time, I enjoy playing guitar as an extracurricular activity.

  • Kshithij (KS) Nandishwara

I am a graduate student in Mechanical Engineering. My research and professional interests lie in Mechatronics ,Data Science and development of Autonomous systems. Born and raised in India, I completed my undergraduate studies at MSU, Bozeman. I will be working on developing a program that uses Computer vision tasks for novel thin film solar cell development under the guidance of Dr Shijing Sun. Other than academics, I love being outdoors playing sports or biking, super into anime and love cooking.

  • Shuan Cheng

My name is Shuan Cheng and I am a first-year graduate student in Mechanical Engineering. I grew up in China and completed my undergraduate studies in Technion, Israel. My research interests are in machine learning, development of autonomous robotic systems, and control, as all of these fields are important for developing an autonomous system for testing life cycles of materials (like batteries or solar cells). In my free time, I enjoy travelling and playing sports like tennis and badminton.

  • Adithya Arvind

I am a second-year graduate student in Mechanical Engineering. My interests lie in using Computer vision for material synthesis and software development for autonomous systems. I was born and raised in India where I completed my undergraduate studies. In my free time, I usually like to hike and play table tennis.

Undergraduate Students

  • Arthur Chong

My name is Arthur Chong, and I am an undergraduate student in the Aerospace Engineering department. I am also an international student from Malaysia, and my research interests are in machine learning and deep learning for autonomous and robotics systems. Machine learning is extremely important in the aerospace industry, as it greatly relies on sensors for optical image capturing. Hence, I will be working on designing and installing the sensing system for a liquid-handling robot to monitor the quality of the materials synthesized by the robot at UW Sun Lab.

  • Austin Martin

I am a junior in Mechanical Engineering interested in battery cell research and informatics. I am also a part of Washington Superbike, a student electric motorcycle team, where I work on the powertrain system. In my free time I like to hike, climb, and play tennis.

  • Emily Leung

My name is Emily Leung and I am a junior in Mechanical Engineering interested in incorporating energy and materials into robotics. I am also involved on campus as an engineering ambassador and am in the Human-powered submarine RSO safety team. My hobbies include reading, watching tv shows and exploring cafes around the area!

  • Hirotaka (Victor) Yin

I am a junior in the Mechanical Engineering Department at the UW. I've lived in Dalian, Beijing and Yokohama before coming to Seattle for my degree, and my interests lie in robotics, mechanical design, as well as data analysis and illustration. I particularly enjoy the meticulous process of designing and troubleshooting new systems. During my free time, I like to learn piano pieces and play badminton & tennis.

  • Tristan Angeles

I am a undergraduate in Mechanical Engineering with an interest in renewable energy systems and design. My goal is to pursue a career in energy storage and assisting with the transition to clean energy. I enjoy being active and in my free time you can find me playing soccer, tennis, skimboarding, or surfing.
